BSC members qualify for a range of benefits.

All benefits – including journals subscription - are back-dated to the start of the calendar year, regardless of when your membership commences.

For postgraduate members:

  • The Postgraduate Committee provides a network for postgraduate students to organise events, share common interests and problems (see tab on left of page)
  • Members can apply for a postgraduate bursary to attend the annual conference free of charge.
  • Each year the annual conference includes a ‘pre-conference’ for postgraduate students to examine the issues that are most pertinent to them.

Reciprocal Relationships:

We have reciprocal agreements with a number of organisations. For members, this means they can attend the other organisations’ events at the other organisations’ reduced member rate, and vice-versa.

There are five categories of membership available:

UK full membership, which includes a personal subscription to the British Journal of Criminology (BJC) & the Society's Journal Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ).

UK full student membership or fully retired can enjoy membership inclusive of a personal subscription to the BJC & CCJ.

UK associate student membership or associate retired or those not in full-time employment membership includes a subscription to the Society Journal CCJ.

Overseas Full Membership (Economic North), which includes a personal subscription to the BJC and CCJ.

i.e. Associate retired or not in full-time employment membership excludes the BJC subscription.

NB: Student membership is for full-time students who are in undergraduate or postgraduate education – on occasion you may be asked to provide evidence of this.

British Society of Criminology Application for Membership

How to join:

Once you have completed the membership application form you will be sent a message containing the payment instructions.  The initial payment for membership fees can be made easily using our secure on-line banking system (PayPal).  You do not need a PayPal account or a credit card to use this facility.

UK members
Payment of subsequent membership fees is by Direct Debit. This is taken out in March each year.  Once we have received your initial payment we will send your welcome letter with a Direct Debit form and stamped addressed envelope. We will then be able to set up your Direct Debit for subsequent membership years.

Overseas members
 If you wish to continue your membership in future years please look out for our payment request in November.  We will contact you to confirm you wish to continue your membership for the following year and to collect your fees.  Overseas members who are able to set up a Direct Debit are offered the UK membership rate.  If you are able to do this please let us know. 

ALL members will have a common renewal date of the 1st January regardless of joining date. Membership runs from January - December and Membership Dues are collected on the 1st week day in March. Therefore cancellation must occur in December (or before) for notification of the coming year. Membership cannot be ended mid-year due to Journal Subscriptions.

A: Academic – Persons engaged full or part-time in any institution of higher education as a teacher or researcher who can demonstrate an interest in the study of criminology or a subject which has connections with it (ie sociology of deviance, sociology of law, forensic psychiatry, legal psychology, applied criminal law, etc.).

B: Research and Practice - Persons engaged full or part-time by, or in, any organisation, institution, department or foundation on research, administration or practice within the field of criminology or criminal justice or a subject closely connected to it (including researchers and practitioners in governments, local authorities, police and probation departments, etc.)

C: Postgraduate – Persons who are studying for a higher educational qualification within the field of criminology or a closely related discipline.

All information held on our database is in aid of membership related administration purposes, to keep you advised of BSC matters and events and to support the Society’s charitable education objectives.
