BSC Policing Network & University of Sheffield One-day symposium: 4 June 2026

Citizen-led (or citizen-involved) policing typically refers to individuals or groups who mobilise to perform functions of security, surveillance and policing. Such activities can take place autonomously, in formal collaboration with the police, or in the grey areas in between. The volume and variety of such activities has grown in the past decade, encompassing long-standing groups such as Neighbourhood Watch and Street Angels alongside a series of other actors such as so-called paedophile hunters, community ‘patrol’ groups, and commercial entities providing retailers with advanced surveillance technologies.

This symposium brings together researchers studying the varied activities of ‘citizen-led policing’ in the myriad contexts in which they occur.

This is an in-person only event. Lunch and refreshments provided. Register here.
